IS YOUR TEENAGER READING THE CLASSICS?
Selected Classic Literature is required reading in most high school and college Literature and
English classes in the United States. With a little help from you a whole new world may be revealed to
your children through books. Educational institutions (guided by good teachers) across the country have
made required reading lists for its middle and high school students. Most of these works teach invaluable
life lessons. Themes are incorporated that basically encourage young people to become lifelong learners
and positive contributing members to world society.
Middle school students are often referred to as going through that awkward age. They are not
teenagers, but they are moving out of the preteen stage and flirting vivaciously with the problems that
come with puberty. This is also the age that poor reading habits produce feelings of poor self esteem
which can cause acting out problems in a classroom setting. These deep feelings of inadequacy cause
problems throughout a child's educational and social world.
     OUTSIDE LIFE
Each season brings a new set of outdoor chores that must be completed. Careful planting, pruning,
grooming of the lawn, shrubbery, flowers, vegetables, paths and walks require a different set of tools. For
safety and fantastic results, keep your tools clean, sharpened and stored in a dry place. The beginning
and end of every job depends on utilizing the right tools. Organize your storage spaces. Separate your
fertilizers and weed killers in order to prevent mistakes. Check the labels and use by dates on all
chemicals.A well manicured yard with complimentary furniture, figurines, storage and living structures
bring many happy family hours. Provide sufficient light for ambiance, safety and night time enjoyment.
Attract beautiful birds by providing safe houses and bird feeders for their pleasure. Every garden needs
water and wind chimes in order to maximize feng shui in the outside space. Bring the calming power of
water into your yard with a fountain or lily pond.
    GAME HEAVEN
Are the teenagers in your house glued to the television with a remote gaming gadget on his/her
lap? The only response is an occasional outburst of energy when winning or losing? Have you ever
explored the world they live in? Perhaps you will enjoy it. My personal favorite is Age of Empires. It still
intrigues me how I can control those tiny people working, and fighting farming and building a civilization.
It is a very good tool for teaching History. Select games engage the mind and develop strong motor skills.
Select the ones that challenge the intellect,  but still bring hours of fun for the entire family.
Are there times when you are totally thrilled at something a
loved one does? You wish for your camera and where is it? Plan
well and make the good moments timeless. Chose from among
thousands of affordable cameras. Save those precious
moments.  Professional video equipment is also affordable.
Encourage the young filmmaker. Do you remember the days
when pictures had to be developed? Photography was very a
expensive hobby that utilized many expensive accessories.
HOW SOON WILL YOUR CHILD READ?
When my granddaughter was 2 years old I taught her to point and click. We used some of the
software programs shown here. Long before kindergarten she learned enough to play some of the
marvelous games below. Her favorites were the Reader Rabbit series. She never got enough of giggling
with those bubbles or the Alphabet train. Learning centers across America are using software to teach
children priceless skills. The programs included here allow valuable practice at home.
Experts agree that learning to play an instrument helps to create well
rounded students. Reading and playing music aids in math comprehension.
The discipline required to play an instrument helps to create and nurture
lifelong skills in concentration, imagination and perserverence. Musical
instruments don't have to be expensive. Browse through string, wind,
keyboard and percussion products for children, young adults and
professionals. Perhaps you are growing a young musician. You won't know
until you introduce the instrument to that little bundle of joy.  Every culture of
the world enjoys some form of music and dance.

Tomorrow's Honor Student. The key to creating an organized and well-prepared student is implanting the
passion to read well and to read often. As a child I read everything. Campbell soup cans, cereal boxes,
comic books, grit newspapers, the Poor John's Farmer's Almanac, and my older brother's school books. I
didn't just like to read. I had to read. Reading was my escape and a means of survival. As a teacher many
children were turned on to reading in my classrooms regardless of the subject taught. Reading ranks
number one when planning your child's education.  Keep Literacy in mind when making even the most
