Poker Rules - Rank of Hands

The Ranking of Poker Hands, from top to bottom and best hand to worst, is as follows. Keep inmind that winning
poker hands is not difficult - you just have to have a hand that is ranked higherthan your opponent. Learn to
play poker before playing in the casino or playing for money on the Internet.

    Royal Flush:
Ten, Jack, Queen, King, Ace of the same suit.
As nothing beats a Royal Flush, it is the most
    desirable of hands in poker.

    Straight Flush:
Five cards in sequence makes a Straight.
The Straight Flush poker hand has all five cards
    in the same suit.
    Examples - Spades: 2-3-4-5-6, Clubs: 3-4-5-6-7.

    Four of a Kind:
Four cards of the same number or face value
    ("quads").

    Full House:
Three cards of one number or face value and two
cards of another number or face value. If more than
one player has a full house, the full house with the highest
ranking three of a kind ("trips") wins

    Flush:
Five cards of the same suit. If there is more than one
flush, the hand with the highest card(s) wins.

    Straight:
Five cards in sequence. Cards can be in any suit.
An Ace can be used in the highest straight
    (10, J, Q, K, A) and the lowest straight (A, 2, 3, 4, 5).

    Three of a Kind:
Three cards of the same number or face value
    ("trips").

    Two Pair:
If two players have two pair, the hand with the highest
pair wins. If they have the same high pair, whoever
has the second highest pair wins. If they have the
same two pair, whoever has the highest fifth card ("kicker")
    wins.

    One Pair:
Two cards of the same number or face value.
If two players have the same pair, the highest outside
    card(s) wins.

    High Card: (Jacks or Better)
The hand with the highest card(s) wins.

    The Forbidden Game

My earliest memory of poker  goes back to my
childhood. I was one of thirteen children, we all
learned to play card games. In winter especially,
a good card game was the cheapest form of
entertainment. I lived on a farm in rural North
Carolina. We did not get electricity until 1960. We
never got in door plumbing. There was no television.
We played, whist, tonk, pitty pat, 500 gin rummy,
crazy eights, 21 blackjack, hearts, a juvenile form
of concentration, spades and poker. We had card
playing rules. Among them were, no poker, no cards for
money, no card games during thunderstorms,
and no card playing on Sundays.  We were told that
lightning would surely strike us dead if we played cards
in a storm and that God would strike us down
as the sinners we surely were if we played cards on
Sunday. We never played cards of any type during
    a storm.

Poker was one of our favorites, because it was taboo. It was the game of
male adults. My father, brothers and the men played this game as a
bonding tool. The games were loud and the stories were bawdy. Kids were
not allowed. This made these games the most popular ones to watch and
learn. It was entertaining and dangerous. It was also the game that we didn't dare
allow our father to witness us playing. We quickly tumbled the cards
together and started a less taboo game when he was around. We didn't know
that some of the violent arguments between my mom and dad could
be traced back to poker games. We didn't know that his many
disappearances were to Atlantic City where he lost much of the money we
    earned as a farming family.

As an adult, I have frequented casinos around the world. I am always
surprised to see how many people play poker for money in a casino and
they never play any other time. I have questioned many people about this
practice and they generally laugh at my caution. I usually laugh with them
because the joke is really on them if they cannot afford the money that they
are losing.  Real poker playing requires practice, skill and luck.  Losing
money that one cannot afford can cause many and varied personal and
family problems.  Gambler's Anonymous is filled with thousands of persons
that are caught up in the moment and cannot help themselves.  I think my father
    was one of those people.

Video Poker is a new thrill for some. Old timers like my father would have
rejected it for the lack of human contact, but it can hold many hours of fun
for some.  I have a friend in St. Martin that can always been found in front of
the video poker machine in her favorite casino preparing for the big
tournament where she pits her wits against other human players.  She
claims that the video poker helps to keep her sharp for the real games.
What can I say, she seems prosperous.

On line video poker is another outlet for poker lovers.  I use the instrument
above to practice and brush up on my game.  I have never lost the amount
allowed. I do okay when I concentrate and think about what I am doing.
Poker is a serious thing for me.  It has not become an obsession, but I do
have some friends who frequent Atlantic City and Vegas that I have
suggested they take a look at the 20 questions to ask yourself
    about gambling.

If you insist on playing.  Practice and Polish your skills. Have fun. Stay
informed. Check out some of the literature, dvd's, computer and video games or
scroll down to the YouTube and watch some of the collected videos. Keep your
    head. Know when to stop.

Practice. Memorize the hands before playing anywhere for money.

    Gambling Advice: The Ramblings
    of a slot junkie...

I love Atlantic City, New Jersey, All of it. My Grandmother took me there when I
was 17 and newly migrated from the south. I was wide eyed and eager to see
the place that my father disappeared to at least twice a year and always in
summer. The history is a fine film in black and white. The idea of the place being
a mecca of pleasure for over a century is intriguing. The story of the development
of the boardwalk and the mansion that once stood over the ocean was an
intriguing history lesson. It was said that water and the sea air had healing affects
on the human body. The vision of those early days often cross my mind as the
reels of my favorite slots come to rest. I walk the boardwalk to clear my head and
feel the wind on my face and it is a refreshing experience.

an Internet gambler.  Know that online gambling in the US is illegal. Paypal and
Amex do not accept business from gaming sites. It is always a good idea to check
the
background of any company before depositing.  Many scams in money
laundering are suspected. If you must play, be an
informed player.

    Get Up and Walk Away

Regardless of whether you are gaming at Donald Trumps, Bally’s, or online one
must have a plan.  Never  gamble blind. Set aside a specific amount of money
to risk. When that amount is gone, get up, go outside, take a walk.
Get some air. Think about what you have lost or spent. When you put a certain
amount in the machine and it  is doubled. Take it out. Perhaps begin with a stack
of  5’s,   10’s or 20’s depending on how much you can afford.  Each time it is
doubled, remove it. When the cash is gone, cash in the tickets and leave the
casino.  If you are sitting at a machine that is  obviously losing, go home.
    Tomorrow is another day.

A long time gambler and friend in St. Martin once told  me never to gamble on the
day they remove the cash from the casino and reset the machines. Find
out  when that is. Christmas week I spent time in Atlantic City. I  wagered much
more than I should have, perhaps it was because I had something on my mind that
I should have dealt with. There were many times when I could have removed my
money and gone home breaking even.  I didn’t leave the casino until I
had gone way over my allotted amount. I decided that I was not going to worry
about it. It was the first time that it had ever  happened.

When I arrived home and opened the mail I found a check for the exact amount
that I had advanced to me on my credit card. You have no idea the feeling that
came over me. I guess I was forgiven that lapse of judgment.

I realize that may never happen again. Casinos on this page approved by the
